When to Change Your Sewing Machine Needle?
Sewing machine needles should be replaced regularly, depending on how often you sew, the materials used, and the sewing style. Changing your sewing machine needle every six to eight hours is recommended. Sewing machine operations cause needles to become dull, bent, or damaged after continuous use, making them less efficient in pushing aside fabric threads. Most sewing machine issues can be resolved quickly by replacing your needle.
What are the Signs You Should Change Your Needle?
When your sewing machine needle is compromised, it can affect the quality of your sewing. Some potential issues that indicate when to change your sewing machine needle include:- Uneven stitching, thread skips, and breaks
- Machine tension challenges
- Damaged or puckering sewing fabric
- Worn needle eye
- Damaged or worn needle points
How to Change a Sewing Machine Needle
Sewing machines are designed for certain needle types. Home sewing machines require a needle with a flat shank end, while industrial sewing machines usually feature a round shank style. Most sewing machines, domestic and industrial, come with instructions for how to change the needle, but general replacement steps are as follows:- Loosen the needle set screw and pull the compromised needle downwards to remove it from the needle bar.
- Insert a new needle, pushing upwards until the end of the shank hits the stop.
- For industrial sewing machines, turn the needle so the scarf is orientated to the hook assembly on the machine.
- Tighten the needle set screw.
